An overview of fungal taxonomic, functional, and genetic diversity in coastal and oceanic biomes in megadiverse Mexico

Abstract A comprehensive literature review of mycodiversity in sandy beaches and oceanic environments Mexico is presented through the analysis published works from 1949 to early 2023. In addition, four unexplored Pacific Ocean Gulf California were sampled order fill knowledge gaps terms sampling biases. Marine fungi reported water column, sediment, debris samples collected beaches, open ocean, deep-sea plains, hydrothermal vents, oxygen minimum zones Mexico, Ocean, California, Caribbean Sea. The taxonomic, functional, genetic diversity, as well distribution patterns potential use marine fungal resources are discussed. list 126 species 83 genera, 40 families, 25 orders, 12 classes, three phyla one subphylum (excluding non-cultured taxa) documented Mexico. Lastly, we identified areas that would benefit additional research, including exploration further biomes coastal covering ecoregions states Sonora, Sinaloa, Nayarit, Michoacán, Oaxaca.
